about
RECORDED IN SUMMER 2010
This record started in M.Cadet where Bend In Time was recorded. Drummer Russell Sherman, and Bassist Jim Frye had taken jobs in Atlanta and Florida. I was into the idea of recording each drum piece of the drum parts myself, and assembling them... which of course is just my occasional maniacal control issue rearing it's head.
It was gonna take FOREVER. It was time consuming and brain-wracking... which is most of the time just what I'm looking for. Eventually I always (luckily) seem to come to my senses. The weather was getting warmer and another intense summer in the building M.Cadet existed in was going to kill me, I was positive.
I had also around this time decided it was time to move back out of Athens and home to Michigan, which would not be possible until at least 2011... but nonetheless, a decision had been made and this affected my decision to pack up M. Cadet and instead work out of this super neat basement over on Odd Street owned by Andrew Heaton and the Packway Handle Band. I knew Andrew from handy-manning on rental houses for him. He and I had struck up a friendship. Odd Street had been built out as a studio and then lost to foreclosure when Andrew bought it. It was a house built into the side of a steep hill. It had 10'+ cielings, a glass partition... and most of all was air-conditioned!
Andrew had some nice gear also, including a Universal Audio LA610, and a Nuemann Microphone... It was very fun.
Anyways, I dragged Ian Werden, who everyone in Athens knows from his employment at a local music store, to play drums. He was super awesome about it. He came in and spent about 3 days indulging all my ideas. It was extra difficult because I had already laid down most of the tracks and sans click... so Ian had to not only figure out what he was playing, but learn the timing flubs/quirks... he did a fantastic job. As a note... I mic'ed his whole kit, but was so infatuated with the LA610/Nuemann combo that I ended up using JUST that mono track as most if not all of the drums on the record.
You'll also hear Marie Davon who is Andrew's wife and a member of Venice Is Sinking as well as the new Powerkompany (with Andrew). She came one evening and sang a bunch of really nice backing vocals.
Heather Daniel came in and played flute on a song or two, back when I was still working at M.Cadet... I almost forgot. She's one of the best people in the world.
Anyhow... I finished tracking and then took the project on a month long trip to Michigan where I did some more vocals and most if not all of the mixing...
But I got sick of the record and lost the drive to do anything with it. I was frustrated with many of the arrangements, but the process of recording it over many many months in many different places and computers/programs, meant I had made irreversible choices and well... It was just pointless to go back on EVERY LEVEL. So I guess I just let it go and sit on a hard drive.
I've decided to unveil it now, because in two words: FUCK IT. It's got lots of musical ideas and executions I am proud of. It was made in what has turned out to be an very pivotal, turmoil-filled period of my life... and the songs punch me in the gut when I hear them and take me back... so hopefully you'll feel something too. Ultimately though, whatever.
ps. i'm not editing or spell checking this description so deal with it.
